Synthetic Radial Aperture Focusing (TRUS-rSAF)

A theory-based design framework for 3D transrectal ultrasound imaging

Ph.D. research · Johns Hopkins University

Low-cost 3D transrectal ultrasound probes scan by manual rotation, which introduces scanning-angle disorientation and non-uniform volumetric image quality. I proposed synthetic radial aperture focusing (rSAF) — synthesizing transmit/receive events across scanning angles to reconstruct each radial plane — and derived the first closed-form analytical description of the method, delineating spatial resolution and grating-lobe positions in the radial dimension. On that foundation I built a design framework and optimization workflow; the optimized TRUS-rSAF improved spatial resolution by up to 50% over a clinical 3D TRUS system.
